France 2026
Scarlet Magdalene Tour
May 20
When you arrive in Marseille, you will be picked up at the airport and taken to check into our hotel. In the evening, we will have dinner at a local restaurant and rest after the long flight.
May 21
After breakfast we will drive to the Camarague, a beautiful seaside region with fascinating history. We will learn about the local geography, where the sea meets the fresh waters, the salt harvesting and soap making traditions, the flamingo migration, and the vibrant diverse culture that makes this region special and unique.
May 22-24
For 3 days we will immerse ourselves in the Festival of Sara-Kali, the patron goddess of the Romani people, whose statue dwells in the crypt of the Church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. She is syncretised with the story of Saint Sara, who accompanied Marie Magdalene, Marie-Jacobe, Marie-Salome when they sailed to France. The festival is joyous. With live music and dancing in the streets, cute shops, a Romani marketplace, great French and Spanish fusion cuisine, and lots of laughter, we will take in the sights and get to know one another.
May 24
Every year on May 24, the Romani people process the statue of Sara-Kali from the Church crypt to the sea, singing and celebrating their blessings, making prayers and petitions, and honoring the Goddess. We will be there for the electric moment when she emerges from the Church, and we will walk to the sea with the other pilgrims to bless and cleanse ourselves in the holy water of her presence.
May 25
At the end of the festivities of Sara-Kali, we will pack up and take a short car ride to Vitrolles, where we will take up residence in our retreat home near the famous sites of Mary Magdalene. Here we will set intentions, hold ceremonies, pursue creative writing, drawing, and collage, and honor the Magdalene’s Mysteries with song, word, art, and oracle. Breakfast is served onsite daily, with fantastic local restaurants for delicious French dinners.
May 26-29
On the 26th and 28th, we will hike for an hour to reach the grotto of Mary Magdalene, where her voluptuous, sensuous statue is hidden behind the main altar in the natural chapel. We can sing, make our prayers, rest in the cool of the cave, collect precious waters, and make personal vows to embody the sacred wisdom spirit of the Magdalene: Priestess, Scholar, and Teacher. You are invited to walk in the footsteps of this magical being, whose story is still so relevant today. In between our hiking days, on the 27th, we will visit St-Maximin-Ste-Baume to see the skull relic, believed to be that of Mary Magdalene, in the Church there.
May 26-28
For many modern goddess women, Mary Magdalene is a powerful figure of sacred feminine authority, devotion, and spiritual courage. In early Christian traditions, she appears as a faithful devotee, a witness to the crucifixion, and the first herald of the resurrection. Later centuries reshaped her image through misunderstanding and moralizing stories that obscured her dignity, yet her memory has endured as a symbol of women’s spiritual leadership and mystical wisdom. Our activities together will explore this narrative, and unlock new understanding of this extraordinary woman.
May 29
On May 29, after breakfast, we will pack up our things and make our way back to Marseille, to the same hotel where we stayed when we arrived. Over a final dinner together, we will recollect our journey, share our photos, and lock in the remarkable moments with memory-sharing.
Nov 30
On Departure Day, you will be taken to the airport for your journey home.
Find yourself on the road with powerful female saints
A pilgrimage to the festival of Sara la Kali and to the sacred landscapes of Mary Magdalene in southern France invites you into a living encounter with devotion, endurance, and sacred belonging. In the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the procession of Sara Kali into the sea honors a dark, protective feminine presence who shelters exiles, travelers, and those who carry spiritual memory across cultures. Nearby, the hills and caves associated with Magdalene, especially the sanctuary of La Sainte-Baume, evoke a different but complementary lesson: the power of solitude, contemplation, and inner transformation. Together these places teach us that the path of the sacred feminine moves through both community celebration and quiet interior devotion, inviting us to honor lineage, reclaim spiritual authority, and carry the flame of compassion and wisdom back into the world.
